This site is dedicated to helping teachers and students in Barre work in a 21st century digital writing classroom. This site is a creation of Young Writers Project, a Vermont nonprofit.

IMPORTANT: We need your help! Be sure your students complete the SPRING WRITING PROMPT and take our Spring Survey!

To all of our YWP Schools Project sites: We really would appreciate your help in our survey/writing prompt work. If you could please spend 20-30 minutes with your students this would help us -- and you.

The spring prompt is located at barre.ywpschools.net/spring2013prompt

The spring survey is located at barre.ywpschools.net/spring2013survey

Please help us assess the impact of your work on the YWP Schools Project sites by having your students take our spring survey (5-7 minutes)  and complete our spring writing prompt (20 minutes).  The survey and prompt are vitally important in helping us to establish that these sites help you teach, and help your students become better writers and better digital citizens.  This can help you justify the need for more computers and the kind of support YWP provides to both teachers and students.

Thanks so much for taking the time to fit this into your busy schedules.  If you have any questions or problems, please do not hesitate to call me at 802-324-9538.

Spring 2013 Survey

We ask that each student complete this quick and easy survey in the spring of the 2012-2013 school year. Your name will not be used. Just answer the questions below. There are no wrong answers. Make sure to click "submit" at the bottom when you are finished.

Spring 2013 Writing Prompt B

Spring 2013 Writing Prompt

Something special

Most people have one or two things that are really special, really important to them.

Choose one thing you own that you really love and use lots of detail to describe it.
Explain how or why you got it, and why it is so special to you.

During the 20 minutes you will be writing, do your best in terms of spelling, punctuation and grammar.  You can write as much as you want.  The box below will automatically expand as you write (just in case you need more room).

You can now Direct Record to your blog.

Hi,

This is Geoff Gevalt, director of YWP. Some of you may like to record directly to your blog, to create a sound podcast of your writing or, even, to create a story by speaking.

We have updated the site to allow you to do this. However, this requires you to have a computer with updated Flash and it's a little tricky to get the machine to work correctly. The good news is that once it starts working, if you've followed the instructions, it will work the next time on that machine.

How do you do it? When you click "Create a Blog Entry" you will see an option at the top for Podcast or Direct Record; instructions are listed below the box and are these:

For Podcast, click Upload upload an .mp3 or .wav file from desk top.

For Direct Record, click Audio recorder: 1) Click Red Button. 2) Flash settings box will appear, FIRST click 'REMEMBER' and then 'ALLOW' 3) When counter moves, start recording. 4) To stop, click Red Button. 5) Click UPLOAD -- Be PATIENT! Upload may take a while. Do not move from that screen window until player appears. 6)Save at bottom. For instructions: http://ywpschools.net/node/760

The link takes you to a different site where there is a Prezi walk through on the instructions and work arounds for any problems you might have with Flash.

If all that fails, please contact Pam Campbell.

Also, we have made two other changes:

  1. Mini Gallery now looks prettier. And you can create image galleries on blogs.
  2. The Sound Player for audio now works with iPads and iPhones and other iThingies...

Geoff

Welcome

Welcome

Young Writers Project is excited to be working with you this year.

YWP has an amazing team of Teacher Coaches to help you throughout the school year. ; these folks have extensive experience as teachers and as digital explorer/learners. Please take advantage of their knowledge. One of them will be the primary Coach for your school.

Your Coaches:  Pam Campbell and Geoffrey Gevalt.

YWP will again set up the classroom and user accounts for you if you'd like.  Please send us  an Excel spread sheet listing the full names of the students in each of your digital classrooms with three columns: Firstname | Lastname | Grade.

Doug DeMaio, YWP's Web Support person, is available to help -- and to answer any technical or support questions you need at any time. Send that spread sheet (or questions) to ddemaio@youngwritersproject .org  or call him at 324-9539. THANKS!

STUDENTS: While this is a 'school' project, we hope you will use this space to share your ideas, creativity and work done outside of school as well. As with all YWP projects -- and your school -- there is one primary rule: Be civil and respectful. You are also encouraged to participate in youngwritersproject.org or respond to the prompts on that site for potential publication in newspapers around the state or on Vermont Public Radio.

Consult the HELP section for information about the site.

This Digital Writing Classroom is set up for each student and teacher to have access to private classroom space. To access your space, or classroom, you must log in using the username and password you have been given for this site. None of the student email addresses is functional. Teachers have working email addresses.

Log in. YWP will work with a project contact to update the userlist on this site and will help teachers add new students and setup new class configurations. As a protocol, student users will have usernames of their FirstnameL(ast intial). So Barack Obama would be BarackO. If there happens to be two Baracks in the school, the second would have the second letter of his last name. So Barack Ossing would be BarackOs. Your teacher has your passwords.

If you wish to change your password  click  "My account" and "Edit." Change the password to something you can remember; we suggest you use the same password you use to log into your school network. Please do not put any personal information in your profile. Read more »
